Salvation Questions
Accepting salvation is a big deal with eternal impact. Maybe your child keeps bringing up the topic and is showing a lot of interest, but how do you know if your child is ready to make that decision? Here are some questions you can ask to get a discussion rolling. Please, NEVER use fear tactics, peer pressure, adult pressure, prizes or tangible rewards to provoke a response from a child. The work of the Holy Spirit in anyone’s life is the only reason to make a decision to become a Christian.
What is sin? Can you give me an example of sin? Have you ever sinned?
Sin is anything we do that is selfish, mean, or wrong. Sin hurts God, ourselves, and others. The only person who never sinned is Jesus. Sin separates us from God.
Who is Jesus and what did he do for us? Why would he do that?
Jesus is God's Son. He was born on Earth as fully God and fully man. He lived a perfect life, never sinning, not even once. He was the only way to fix the problem caused by sin. He died on a cross as payment for our sins. Three days later, he rose from the dead. Jesus died so that we would no longer be separated from God. He did it because He loves us.
What does it mean to accept Jesus as your Savior?
When we accept Jesus as our Savior we are deciding to follow God's ways over our ways. Because Jesus took our punishment we are forgiven of our sin.
What do you think happens when we accept Jesus as our Savior? How do our lives change? What does it mean to be a follower of Christ?
First, admit you are a sinner. Then you must also ‘repent’ or turn from sin and say to God that you are sorry for your sins. When you become a Christian, you are saying to God you will go His direction instead of your own. That is what it means when you say Jesus is your Lord.”
If you feel like your child is ready, encourage them to pray in their own words. After they pray, read Romans 10:13 together and remind them this verse is a promise. It means that they have become a Christian. Suggest some special way to remember the occasion such as writing the date in their Bible, beginning a journal, taking a family photo, etc. Also, discuss with them that the next step is baptism.
